Time Warps and Tongue Twists

Try explaining brain-bending concepts from mathematics and physics to someone. The tools at your disposal? Hopelessly inadequate. It's like sketching quantum foam with a crayon you found under the couch. Time, causality, truth: These supposedly solid notions turn slippery depending on which language or cultural lens you're peering through. So when tech firms try to articulate innovation, what happens when the axioms themselves won't sit still?

"what if mathematical truth moves through channels that bypass human language entirely?"

This conveyance puzzle isn't going away, and it cuts right to how we connect esoteric science with human perspectives, assuming those perspectives can even metabolize what's being served.

Was Gibbs onto something when he called mathematics a language and reminded us of Galileo's conviction that the universe was written in geometric script? Sure, probably. But then, accumulating evidence says our grasp of reality gets filtered through cognitive hardware that evolution selected for savanna awareness, not Hilbert spaces. Our brains jury-rigged neural circuitry meant for spatial mapping and counting antelope to handle abstract mathematical processing instead. For, this biological kludge imposes hard limits. Working memory that's laughably finite (Wait, what were we talking about?), conscious thought that crawls along sequentially like dial-up internet. Even mathematical notation grew organically from prose, scribbling its way through shorthand like m̅ before crystallizing into symbols. The language we deploy, mathematical or otherwise, molds our ideational space, maybe even cages it. Which directly messes with conveyance.

Our native conceptual tools might be embarrassingly clumsy for describing realities far from human norms. Take the task of mediating meaning across linguistic structures, something familiar if you've worked with Tahitian. Finding a perfect conceptual overlay? Nah, it is often a mirage. Consider the Moana perspective on Tā (time) and Vā (space). As ʻŌkusitino Māhina lays out, many Moana worldviews frame time cyclically: You're facing a known past while backing blindly into an unknown future. To put it differently, what you have seen has happened before you, and what you cannot (yet) see will be coming in front of you. It is the difference between Mua and Muri (and such cognates as Muʻa/Muli).

Tā and Vā form an indivisible medium, contrasting with the tidy western timeline we're used to. In fact, linguistic markers reinforce this: Spatial terms moonlight as temporal ones. If we reconstruct a proto-language, the Austronesian root udehi braids together "behind", "after", "stern", "future", and "west" across its descendants, sketching a spatio-temporal map operating under radically different principles than Indo-European assumptions. Relaying ideas across such fundamentally different architectures calls for a willingness to entertain that reality might be configured in ways your grandmother never imagined, a kind of conceptual Wānanga, if you borrow from Māori thinking.

Then physics barges in and kicks over all the intuitive furniture regarding time and causality. Einstein's relativity proposed a block universe where all moments coexist eternally, nuking the idea of a universal Now. Did your mind just say Quantum Mechanics? Well, it throws stranger curveballs still, with effects potentially preceding causes in delayed-choice experiments, or systems existing in superpositions of causal sequences. Causality (the principle that causes must precede effects) feels like the universe's prime directive, the thing preventing logical meltdowns and paradoxical self-annihilation. Still with us? Good.

The vacuum speed of light, c, appears as spacetime's structural speed limit enforcing this sequence. Yet quantum laws keep pointing at alternatives to this tidy progression to raise the uncomfortable question: Is our A-then-B story convenient fiction? How do you explain phenomena that don't respect the established order? That's a conveyance head-scratcher that won't quit.

But what if mathematical truth moves through channels that bypass human language entirely? Look at quantum entanglement: Particles maintain correlations across arbitrary distances, blissfully ignoring the space between them, as if information flows through some backdoor we haven't located yet. Or biology, encoding instructions in DNA's molecular sequences and executing them via protein folding dynamics that happen way below the threshold of conscious thought itself. Or AI agents that cook up their own exchange protocols, optimized for pure function, leaving their human creators standing there confused.

Now, could mathematics be a form of computation intrinsic to the universe's substrate, running on principles that exceed human cognitive bandwidth? Some theoretical physics explores computation beyond standard limits, invoking actual infinities like it's no big deal. These non-anthropocentric angles say mathematical reality might broadcast structural information through mechanisms we're barely registering, irrespective of whether any mind is tuned in. Our symbolic systems, even graphically dense ones like birdtracks, might be human marginalia scrawled on a much larger, dynamic structure. The Samoan concept of Vā, that relational space, might even apply between abstract concepts themselves.

Traversing this conceptual fluid where foundational notions like time, causality, and mathematical structure refract through culture and warp under physics means acknowledging that human-made language can be a distorting medium, and that different realities might be under construction simultaneously. For business companies trying to sculpt what comes next, conveying intent across these conceptual chasms is the central work, a kind of Tongan Heliaki where one thing gestures toward another, fuller meaning. You need guides fluent in these different modes of seeing, people who can chart the subtleties of human worldviews and the alien landscapes suggested by cutting-edge science. The Talanoa that Fijian ideal of candid discussion about what's actually real permeates across knowledge systems and societies, perpetually prompting the next round of questions. Which is to say: this conversation is nowhere near finished.
